The cruciate ligaments on the knee prevent the joint from pivoting too far forward or backward.
The anterior cruciate ligaments are located in the middle of the kneeas well as the posterior cruciate ligaments. These bands are wrapped tightly around the thigh and shin, forming a cross pattern in the knee. This prevents the joint from pivoting too far forward or backward.
Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligaments are most often incurred during sports activities. However, a torn or strained anterior cruciate ligament can also be the result of frequent physical exertion, in which the knee is rotated too much and too often. Cruciate ligament damage usually causes swelling, stiffness, and pain. At the moment the injury occurs, a ‘popping’ sound can often be heard.
