Video games continue to prove their effectiveness as therapyWhere learning technique. It is now in the field of reading that their advantages are highlighted. CNRS researchers from the psychology and neuro-cognition laboratory have worked on the effects of action video games on reading skills. The results, published in the journal Nature Scientific Report, open up new perceptives on learning methods at school.
The researchers tested 36 people separated into two groups. The first regularly played video games unlike the second. Invented words, such as “gibois”, then quickly appeared on a screen, like a flash, making them difficult to read. The results showed that players were able to identify letters more easily and read more words correctly than others.
Video games soon in schools
This ability is explained by the fact that action video games or shooting, call for a strong visual complexity and rapidity of movement. The players then see their perception, their attention and their spatial cognition significantly increased influencing their reading ability.
The results of the study PIRLS 2016 which have just been published show that the reading level of French people has not stopped falling in 15 years. Instead of encouraging the intensive use of video games, the researchers developed their own game as a result of this study. This educational action video game called EVAsion contains 4 mini-games. It will be tested with 759 students of CP from the Academy of Grenoble and should promote the learning of reading. The first results are expected for summer 2018.
