An MRI has enabled American doctors to discover a worm lodged in the brain of a patient who has suffered from migraines and malaise for several months.
Gerardo Moctezuma, a resident of Austin (United States) suffered from strong migraines and fainting for several months without knowing the exact cause. Doctors initially explained to him that blood pressure problems could be the cause of this disorder, but an MRI performed at Dell Seton Medical Center finally revealed the unthinkable: Gerardo Moctezuma had a worm lodged in his brain.
A “rare and truly extraordinary” case
An operation was urgently scheduled to remove the parasite. The relief felt by the patient following the intervention confirmed that the presence of the worm was indeed the cause of his migraines. Doctors have spoken of a “rare and truly extraordinary” case that may have occurred after eating undercooked pork in Mexico.
Since the patient had not been there for 10 years, it is likely that the worm remained in Gerardo Moctezuma’s brain for a decade. “We believe the parasite has been growing in his brain for more than a decade undetected,” neurosurgeon Jordan Amadio explained to CBS Austinwhich shares the images of this phenomenon. The local media explains that a worm of the same type had been discovered a few years earlier in the brain of the sister of Gerardo Montezuma.
