the intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is an obstetric condition caused by the fetus not getting enough oxygen or being poorly fed. Researchers at the University Medical Center in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) thought they had finally found hope for treatment in Viagra. Since sildenafil (the drug molecule) is believed to increase the flow of blood to the placenta and thereby stimulate the growth of babies.
But halfway through the clinical study, the scientists were disillusioned and ended their trials because 11 babies died due to too high blood pressure in their lungs. “This lung disease, common in babies, affected 17 infants in the group where Viagra was tested, resulting in death in 11 cases. In the control group, only 3 babies had these lung problems and they did not die.” said gynecologist Wessel Ganzevoort, in the daily By Volkstrant.
The latter alerted Canadian researchers, who were conducting a similar study in parallel.
