Are you prone to dizziness ? You might be able to relieve them through You tube videos. Some would be as useful and effective as a consultation with the doctor. This is what researchers at the University of Michigan say in a study published in the journal Neurology.
To reach this startling conclusion, scientists reviewed no less than 3,000 videos giving remedies for dizziness or dizziness. Of these 3,000 videos, 33 specifically spoke of the Epley maneuver, a therapeutic gesture designed to relieve the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a relatively common inner ear disorder, which can often lead to dizziness. This type of dizziness, intermittent and short-lived, is triggered by sudden changes in position. It would concern nearly a third of patients suffering from vertigo.
To treat this paroxysmal vertigo, many patients have recourse to the technique known as “Epley maneuver”, named after the doctor who developed it. It is based on a series of positions to be chained for a few minutes.
According to the researchers, 64% of YouTube videos on the subject teach this movement correctly and can be used by people with BPPV.
On the other hand, it is necessary to succeed in sorting out the sum of the videos. For example, the most successful video was developed by the American Academy of Neurology. A pledge of seriousness for some health professionals, who believe in the effectiveness of this advice provided in video. Dr Kirk Roberts of the Columbia University Center for Dizziness, Vertigo and Balance, who was not involved in the study, is convinced of the method. On NBC news, he explains that he will even add the links of certain videos to the documents he gives to his patients with dizziness.
Nevertheless, the doctor warns against people who would be tempted to make their own diagnosis by going to You tube. There are indeed different causes of vertigo and they are not all treated in the same way: vertigo linked to changes in position, vertigo lasting several days, repetitive vertigo … To find out which one you are suffering from, the best solution is to go see an ENT doctor.
