The coronavirus epidemic is receding, while the Delta variant progresses. The latter continues to worry experts and is monitored by the French government, in particular in the Landes, where a cluster has been identified.
A source of contagion in the Landes
In an nursing home located in Pontonx-sur-l’Adour, in the Landes department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, a cluster of the Delta variant was discovered. In fact, 23 residents are infected as well as 6 members of the nursing staff. Therefore, the elderly are confined to their rooms. Yet 21 of the residents are vaccinated against Covid-19. It therefore seems that the serum offers effective protection against this variant, since none of them has been forced to be admitted to intensive care. However, 3 people are hospitalized. Among the professionals, 5 have refused to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Local measures
The head of government, Jean Castex, and the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, both visited the Landes on June 24, to take stock of the health situation. In the department, the Delta variant represents more than 70% of new cases of coronavirus. The Prime Minister said that a “ seven day action plan ”Would be set up in the Landes, to stop the spread of the variant. Vaccination is at the heart of this strategy, where vaccine doses will be delivered very soon. Indeed, the vaccine remains the best way to effectively protect against severe forms of the disease, as Jean Castex reminds us, “ the vaccine is an essential lifeline “. The Landes department is the only one that exceeds the alert threshold, which is 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is therefore important to control the Delta variant, which could become predominant in Europe by the end of summer 2021, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. In the meantime, concerning France, the Prime Minister indicated, during his visit to the constituency concerned, that “ if local circumstances justify it, we could postpone the tonnage reductions planned for July 1 “.
