A study from Southern Methodist University in Dallas reveals that the happier you are in your relationship, the lower your motivation to seduce. As a result, your propensity to gain weight is high.
Andrea L. Meltzer, psychologist and lead author summarizes this link between marital happiness and weight gain: “ In general, spouses who are more satisfied with their marriage and therefore less likely to separate gain more weight over time. In contrast, less satisfied couples tend to gain less weight “.
This new study reinforces the often held idea that marriage is linked to gaining a few pounds and that divorce is associated with weight loss.
But, marriage also makes it possible to be in good health. It often involves healthier behaviors, better monitoring of medical treatments and a more diversified diet.
To reach this conclusion the researchers studied the database and information of 169 newly married couples whose marital satisfaction and weight were followed over 4 years.
Throughout the study, the newlyweds declared twice a year their level of conjugal satisfaction or, conversely, of any dispositions for a divorce. Spouses less happy in their marriage and more likely to think about separation, on average, gained less weight.
