A scientific study conducted by Lund University in Sweden has shown that the effects of tamoxifen, a drug used to treat cancer, can be improved by drinking coffee.
Helena Jernström, associate professor of Experimental Oncology at Lund University and her team say 2 or more cups of coffee per day halved the rate of cancer recurrence. The results of this survey are published in the journal Cancer Causes Control.
They followed for 5 years, more than 600 patients with breast cancer. Half of the 300 of them had been treated with tamoxifen after surgery.
The researchers found that patients with positive estrogen receptors treated with tamoxifen and who consumed two or more cups of coffee per day had an almost 50% reduced risk of recurrence compared to women who drank no or very little coffee.
If these results are confirmed by larger studies, they will pave the way for new recommendations during treatment with tamoxifen. In particular, regular consumption of coffee.
