In 2014, the mother of little Daniel Bell, noted changes in the behavior of her son. Although he had always been a kind and accommodating little boy, he began to have temper tantrums. “Real crises over mostly trivial things” she explains to the Daily Mail. “But what really worried me was when he got so tired that he didn’t want to walk when we went for a walk. He never left his stroller but didn’t seem to be sick or have fever“.
Diagnosis: pilocytic astrocytoma
She then remembers the testimony of a mother that she had read a few months earlier on a social network about her child’s rare disease. All the symptoms seemed to match. She goes to the doctor but he thinks of an allergic reaction during the period of hay feverand prescribed him an antihistamine. The treatment having no effect, Daniel’s mother decides this time to go to the Emergency Department. The scanner then reveals that the little boy is suffering from brain tumour. Further examinations indicate that it is a pilocytic astrocytoma, a rare form of glioma of the central nervous system.
Fortunately, the tumor was not too large. It could be removed after a 9-hour operation.
5 years later, Daniel is once again a little boy like the others. He is educated and loves math. His mother has embarked on a pilgrimage to nurseries and nursery schools in the region to alert parents to the symptoms of astrocytoma, a tumor common in children and adolescents.
