The High Authority for Health (HAS) has just granted the first “innovation package” to a new technique for treating benign breast tumors by high frequency ultrasound.
The “innovation package”, launched by decree in February 2015, allows health and social security authorities to cover an innovative product or act in order to facilitate its development.
300 patients in 12 hospitals will therefore benefit from the first of this technique, while the Primary Health Insurance Fund will pay for their treatment.
Treatment under local anesthesia
This technique for treating benign tumors (such as adenofibromas) consists of sending deep ultrasound, using a probe placed on the breast. No question of putting the patient to sleep and incising the breast: the simple heating action of high-frequency ultrasound allows the tumor to be reduced. Local anesthesia is sufficient.
Eventually, the radiologist could take charge of this technique for reducing benign tumors, which would free up surgeons.
