UK researchers at the University of Southampton gathered data from nine previously published studies involving a total of 430,000 participants and found that drink two cups of coffee per day was linked to a 44% reduced risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver. Of this large number of participants, 1,990 had cirrhosis of the liver.
“Cirrhosis is potentially fatal and there is no cure as such”, said Dr. Oliver Kennedy, lead author of the study. “Consequently, the conclusions of this study in terms of risk prevention are not negligible”.
Compared to not consuming coffee, the researchers estimated that one cup per day was linked to a reduced risk of 22%. With two cups, the risk drops by almost 44%, with three cups, it drops by 57% and 65% for four cups. This study has just been published in the journal Alimentary pharmacology and therapeutics.
More than one million people die each year from cirrhosis of the liver. The disease can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption, immune disorders, hepatitis, or liver disease. “Coffee is a complex mixture containing hundreds of chemical compounds, and it is not yet known which compound is responsible for protecting the liver. “ adds the doctor.
