Made super rich by the internet, but Twitter founder Jack Dorsey complains about the current form of the internet.
Dorsey got there early and remembers what it was like in the early days of the internet. He misses this period, when protocols like IRC made the web seem like a place of limitless possibilities. But it has also had an impact on today’s internet. He’s not that impressed.
Jack Dorsey complains about the internet
He say on Twitter: ‘the days of usenet, irc, the web… even email (w PGP)… were great. centralizing discovery and identity in companies has really damaged the internet. I realize I’m partly to blame, and I regret it.”
The message is remarkable. This is because he is the co-founder of Twitter and he has made billions from it. Precisely with a platform that centralized the way in which we can consume news. Kind of the opposite of what he wanted, apparently. While Twitter hasn’t grown into a huge platform, it has certainly impacted our way of providing information. Many of us turn to Twitter when we want to follow current events as close to real-time as possible, but sometimes the company struggles to fight misinformation.
Complain
Dorsey is a bit of a complainer. He has had several discussions with his shareholders about the direction of the company. But he also criticized the current state of the internet and its future. In December, he ranted about how Web3 had already been co-opted by investors. “You don’t own ‘Web3’,” he said at the time.
