In the United States, 24,400 people were admitted to the emergency room following an accident related to a sports mat.
Sports halls have been booming for a few years. But what is less known is that treadmills, essential accessories in these complexes, are sometimes the cause of injuries. Thus, as the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, thousands of users would go to the emergency room every year as a result of injuries caused by these devices.
Young children most affected
According to the Commission, nearly 24,400 people went to the emergency room last year following an incident caused by a treadmill. It is the youngest who are most often injured. In fact, 8,700 young children got their hands stuck under the device while it was on. These are usually mild burns.
For injuries directly related to sport, these are contusions, fractures or even rectal bleeding. Deaths remain infrequent. Nevertheless, 30 people died on a treadmill between 2003 and 2012.
Tips for avoiding the stupid injury
To avoid all dangers, the Commission advises the 28 million American users of these treadmills to remain vigilant. Among the most important tips, it’s best to turn the device on before you step on it and look straight ahead to avoid losing your balance. It is also a good idea not to exceed your physical limits and, of course, to keep younger children away from treadmills.
