The national reference center for Staphylococci of Lyon Civil Hospices is worried about the upsurge in toxic shocks linked to periods. While no case was identified in 1990, in recent years toxic shock syndrome has reappeared in young women. From 5 cases in 2004, the number climbed to 22 cases in 2014 …
Disruption of the vaginal flora, misuse of tampons used too frequently … The hypotheses on the causes of this phenomenon need to be analyzed. To better understand, the hospital center is launching a collection of used swabs to be able to work on a large number of bacterial samples.
Symptoms of toxic shock during menstruation
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious acute illness that can occur during rules. It can arise during the use of periodic buffer in young, healthy patients who carry a particular strain of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, recall the Hospices Civils de Lyon. This syndrome is caused by toxins produced by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
While a 23-year-old model had to have an amputation due to this infection, it is important to know how to recognize the signs of this infection before it gets worse:
-sudden fever (38.9 ° C or higher)
-vomiting
– feeling unwell with headache
-diarrhea
– sunburn-like rash
If you have these symptoms during your period, remove your menstrual cup or tampon and see a doctor urgently, says the Lyon hospital center.
