Tobacco, alcohol or illicit substances such as cannabis are not consumed by everyone in the same way. Santé Publique France has just published its Barometer of the consumption of psychoactive substances by professional environmentafter a survey of 25,000 people.
“The various indicators suggest higher than average levels of use in the accommodation and catering sector for practically all products (excluding daily alcohol), for both men and women,” underline the researchers from Santé Publique France. .
The construction sector is marked by particularly high levels of tobacco and alcohol consumption among men, as are agriculture and the real estate sector. Finally, the arts and entertainment sector is associated with more frequent experimentation with illicit substances among men and among women, and occasional alcohol consumption (i.e. 6 drinks or more on the same occasion, at least once times a month), more common in men.
Conversely, certain sectors of activity are associated with lower than average levels of consumption, in particular among men who work in public administration, education and in the human health and action sectors. social.
Differences explained by age differences
“The differences observed according to the sectors of activity can partly be explained by differences in age. This is particularly the case for the use of illicit substances and alcohol among men in the arts and crafts sector. shows, who are on average younger than men in other sectors” explain the researchers. “The same observation can partly explain the high consumption for almost all products in the accommodation and catering sector, where men are also younger”.
Drinking at work is part of the culture in some workplaces
Among those in employment, 12% (14% of men and 9% of women) declare that the consumption of alcohol at work is part of the culture of their professional environment. That said, they do not drink at lunchtime, for the most part: 62% of men and 78% of women declare that they do not consume alcohol for a working lunch, nor during working hours. Meals and pots are the privileged moments of this consumption.
“Our results reveal disparities between sectors of activity, thus highlighting the increased risks within certain sectors with a view to possible targeted prevention, commented Viêt Nguyen-Than, Head of the addictions unit at the Health Prevention and Promotion Department of Public Health France. We are developing many information and prevention tools that can be a support for companies in their prevention approach. Our remote assistance systems, Tobacco Info Service, Alcohol Info Service and Drugs Info Service, can also be resources for everyone.”
