Previous studies have shown that standing as often as possible improves mood and self-esteem in healthy people. Researchers at the University of Auckland, Australia, investigated whether people suffering from depression light to moderate could also benefit from the upright position.
Staying upright improves self-esteem
For this study, the researchers recruited 61 patients with mild to moderate form of depression. Some were assigned to a “your usual position” group and others to a “stand up straight” group. In the latter group, they were asked to straighten their backs and shoulders, think about stretching the top of their heads towards the ceiling while pulling their shoulder blades down. And a band has been placed on their back to help them maintain that position.
These 61 patients were then asked to perform the stressful task of speaking in front of an audience for at least 5 minutes.
“The results of our study suggest that standing up straight can make you feel more alert and enthusiastic, allow you to be less afraid and have better self-esteem after a stressful task.” emphasize the researchers.
