Three types of IUDs will no longer be fitted in France: Ancora, Novaplus and Sethygyn, announced National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety.
This decision follows the observation of a higher risk of rupture during the removal of these IUDs, as well as a greater possibility of spontaneous expulsion. The ANSM recalls that this latter risk would call into question the effectiveness of contraception, exposing women to an unwanted pregnancy.
Before 3 years, no preventive withdrawal recommended
If IUDs will no longer be available on the French market, the ANSM does not recommend the preventive withdrawal of contraceptives. At least, “when they have been installed for less than 3 years“underlines the press release. The risks really develop beyond this period.
Several pieces of advice have been given by the ANSM to women carrying these IUDs. They must remain attentive to signs of expulsion: abdominal pain or bleeding. About 20,000 women are asked these models each year, estimated the agency. During the gynecological follow-up, after the 3 years of wearing, the doctors were instructed to change the contraceptive.
