Headaches and Fatigue: Omikron’s Best-Known Symptoms
Do you suffer from headaches and fatigue? Then it is possible that you have the omikron variant of the coronavirus. You may still know loss of smell and taste from the delta variant, but these complaints are actually less common with omikron, according to research. Due to the now dominant omikron, the list of symptoms of the corona virus may have to be adjusted. And this one would look like this.
In South Africa, where the omikron variant was first discovered, doctors first saw fatigue and headaches in patients for the first time in November last year. The well-known symptoms such as coughing were much less common. From the first results of studies from the United Kingdom and Norway the same thing emerges: fatigue and headaches seem to be among the five most common symptoms.
Delta variant symptoms vs. omikron
These are the symptoms of the delta variant of the coronavirus, as we know it now:
- cold complaints such as a cold, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat
- cough
- shortness of breath
- increase or fever
- sudden loss of smell and/or taste (without nasal congestion)
And this is what the new list of omikron symptoms (according to the above studies) could soon look like:
- runny or stuffy nose
- headache
- (mild or severe) fatigue symptoms
- sneezing and/or coughing
- a sore throat
Testing for fatigue and headaches?
The question now is: should we soon be testing ourselves en masse if you are a bit tired or have a headache? No, not yet. At the RIVM, fatigue and headaches are currently still on the list of least common complaints, as part of general cold complaints. “If you are bothered by that, there is definitely a reason to test,” says a spokesperson for the RIVM against the Volkskrant. According to the spokesperson, the list may still be adjusted in the future. “If headache and fatigue turn out to be important complaints for omikron, we will look again. But we do not see enough signals for this at the moment.” For the time being, more research is therefore needed into symptoms of corona patients.
