Following Emmanuel Macron’s declarations, the French Association of Urology (AFU) underlines in a press release that “the weight of infertility should not be borne only by the woman”.
Let’s start with “a simple and alarming observation. Most often, men and their fertility are little explored and reduced to a simple biological examination. However, men are responsible for the couple’s infertility in 30 to 50% of cases”, first explain the doctors.
Several factors can treat male infertility
A field of action not to be neglected, since several factors can reduce/treat male infertility. “The environment and lifestyle have major influences on the reproductive qualities of men: these two factors are modifiable and allow an improvement in the number and quality of sperm,” thus recalls the AFU. “Certain pathologies such as varicocele (dilated veins in the testicle) are also a frequent factor in impaired male fertility” continues the learned society.
Furthermore, the understanding of spermatogenesis has evolved and certain treatments can now be used to improve the number and quality of sperm.
Infertility: “Men must be systematically referred to the urologist”
As a result, the “men in infertile couples must be systematically referred to the urologist”, say the specialists.
“It also seems important to us that we can inform men from an early age about infertility factors,” they add. “Informing, advising, screening, allowing sperm to be preserved if necessary, finding solutions to improve male fertility seems essential to us.” they conclude.
In February 2022, the AFU participated with other learned societies in the drafting of the report requested by the President of the Republic on infertility.
In France, one in 4 couples have difficulty conceiving
Today in France, one in four couples have difficulty conceiving. The solution most often implemented is their treatment through medically assisted procreation. For around forty years, this solution has enabled around 40% of households to have a child.
During his speech on January 16, President Emmanuel Macron advocated a “demographic rearmament” which caused a lot of reaction. To remedy the constant decline in the number of births in France in recent years, the Head of State promised shorter but better paid parental leave, called “birth leave”, and a plan to combat infertility.
