The case never broke out in France and yet the Prolift vaginal prosthesis is at the origin of a real health scandal in several countries of the world such as Australia, the United States or even in Scotland, reveals The Obs. In the United States, for example, millions of dollars in damages have been paid to victims. In Australia, a trial is underway to determine the possible responsibilities of the Johnson & Jonhson laboratory, manufacturer of this vaginal prosthesis.
What exactly do we blame the Prolift for? The Obs investigation goes back in detail to the origin of this legal storm that is shaking several countries.
The Proflift is a device designed to prevent prolapse (organ descent). If he finds himself in the crosshairs of justice it is that users have pointed out the dangers of this device on health. This device composed of a plastic mesh net that supports the organs like a hammock would cause complications such as pain, vaginal inflammation and wound healing problems. Victims speak bluntly of prosthesis which “shears the vagina”, or of “sandpaper”, reports L’Obs. Some victims at the origin of certain complaints lodged in Australia suffer from perforation of the rectum or the bladder linked to the installation of the Prolift. The newsmagazine’s investigation evokes two problems that could be involved in these undesirable effects: the first linked to the composition, the excessively heavy tissue would pull on the nerve endings of the vagina, giving rise to inflammation; the second defect is due to the lack of expertise of the surgeons during the installation.
A situation under control in France
The Prolift was created by the French but manufactured by Americans, via the American laboratory Johnson & Johnson. If in France no media coverage has been made around possible complications related to Prolift, it is because surgeons have been better trained in fitting the device. As for the possible victims, they would have been better taken care of, which explains why the situation remained under control, explains L’Obs.
It was different in the United States, where a first trial in 2012 resulted in 11 million damages for a plaintiff. And now ? The Prolift Kit would have been withdrawn from the market in France and in the world according to information from L’Obs.
