The Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus has evolved and this is not good news: according to researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (in the United States), its “new form” is more transmissible and multiplies more easily than the version former.
Explanations. At the start of the Covid-19 epidemic, in China, the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus appeared in a first form; but on arriving in Europe (in Italy, France, Spain…), the virus underwent genetic mutations to reach a new form – baptized D614G. Today, the “new generation” coronavirus D614G would be the majority on the planet.
However, according to researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (who published their work this Thursday, July 2 in the specialized journal Cell), the “new version” of the coronavirus would probably be more contagious than the previous one.
A “new” virus that is more transmissible but (probably) not more dangerous
“It looks like the virus is replicating better and may be more transmissible“commented Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States. Indeed: according to American researchers, D614G penetrates cells more easily than its “ancestor”. laboratory tests (cell cultures) have confirmed this characteristic.
Is the “new” coronavirus therefore more dangerous for health? Right now, nothing is certain. “We don’t know yet if a person is doing worse with it or not.“explained Dr. Fauci.
While the study authors believe that D614G could be associated with more severe respiratory symptoms, it does not appear that “novel coronavirus” is associated with more severe Covid-19 disease. In short, research is progressing, and barrier gestures are more important today than ever…
