At the age of 116, the Italian Emma Morano is the new dean of humanity. His secret? An egg-based diet.
116-year-old Emma Morano has been making a lot of talk since May 12. Because since the death of the American Susannah Mushatt Jones, who was also 116 years old, the Italian has become the new dean of humanity.
3 eggs every day for 50 years
A textile worker until she was 75, this woman has not had it easy. Survivor of the two world wars, she leaves her husband who beat her in 1938, while divorce is still prohibited in Italy. After this traumatic experience, Emma Morano will not engage in any other sentimental relationship in order to maintain her independence and avoid “any relationship of domination”. According to her, this is what kept her alive at the age of 116.
But the eating habits of the new dean of humanity would not be totally foreign to her longevity. Since she was 20, Emma Morano has claimed to have followed a diet that consists of eating two raw eggs and one cooked egg per day. At the time, she was prescribed this treatment to fight anemia, a disorder characterized by an abnormally low level of red blood cells in the blood, caused mostly by iron deficiency.
Emma Morano’s male alter ego is Yisrael Kristal, a 112-year-old former deportee who survived the Auschwitz camp. The man considers for his part that the secret to living a long time is to “live with joy while avoiding too much work.” Everyone has their own method. To date, the world record for longevity is held by the Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.
