The effectiveness of grandmother’s remedies for getting pregnant, such as the consumption of certain plants, has not been scientifically proven. This does not prevent following some of them because they can participate in the relaxation of women.
- In 2020, 100 women aged 25 to 29 gave birth to 10.6 children.
- In 2010, this ratio was 12.9 children and, in 2000, 13.4.
Are there really grandmother’s remedies to get pregnant? The answer is no for Rachel Lévy, head of the reproductive biology department – CECOS, at the Tenon hospital in Paris, interviewed by Agence France Presse (AFP): according to her, there is no “no evidence of efficacy” scientific.
“No scientific study has shown a positive effect of plants on fertility”
An observation shared by many of his colleagues. Joelle Belaïsch-Allart is a gynecologist and president of the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF), and she assures AFP that“no scientific study has shown a positive effect of plants on fertility”.
Naturopathy, a received idea?
Another questioned technique: naturopathy. This unconventional soft medicine is however increasingly known and appreciated by consumers. It brings together a set of natural and biological methods that are generally used to fight against certain ailments such as fatigue, stress, sleep disorders, etc.
On the other hand, some doctors are more skeptical about fertility: “I don’t know of any scientific study that proves the effectiveness of naturopathy”believes Marie de Crécy, gynecologist and member of the National Federation of Colleges of Medical Gynecology (FNCGM). “Yes [les femmes] want to do it [consommer des plantes]they can do it but they must not wait for it to boost” their fertility.
Female fertility is falling in France
“The population of women aged 20 to 40, the ages when they are most fertile, has been declining since the mid-1990saccording to’Health Insurance. Their fertility is also decreasing and this is, in 2019 and 2020, the main factor explaining the decrease in the number of births.”. Fertility can be defined as the biological ability of a woman, man or couple to conceive a child.
It is therefore a real problem, which would have different causes: the fact that women and men have children at a later age, smoking, drug and alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, diet, obesity, anorexia or the pollutants present in many everyday consumer products such as food or cosmetics.
An indirect link with female fertility
“It must be emphasized that stress affects ovulation, believes Marie de Crécy. So we can see indirect benefits if we take herbal teas to calm down, to be less anxious, there, I say ‘why not’. It’s not just plants, let’s also mention relaxation, sophrology, yoga… which can help you sleep better, for example”.
