You can also turn classics into an electric car. That was done with one of the most famous cars Chevrolet has ever built.
One of the most famous cars Chevrolet has ever built is now an electric vehicle. Company worked together with Cagnazzi Racing and Hot Rod publisher MotorTrend to electrify the 1957 Chevy Project X vehicle. MotorTrend’s bankrupt Popular Hot Rodding magazine bought the Project X car in 1965 for $250. Over the decades it has been used to test a number of power technologies. Before the electrical system, it had a Chevy LSX V-8 engine.
Electronic classic
It’s not a small car, so it does need some power. The car now has a 400-volt electric powertrain with an estimated 340 horsepower. Chevrolet says the battery can store 30 kilowatt hours of electricity. The range depends on the fitted quick-change differential, which can be changed to optimize the car for acceleration or range. Still, Chevy claims the now-EV has “enough range for weekend cruising.”
While the car still has the front suspension installed in 2007, Cagnazzi Racing has made some changes. Think of a switch to an electric brake booster and an electrohydraulic power steering pump. Some springs have also been swapped, as there is less weight under the hood and more in the rear. This is because of the batteries.
Not the first
This is the third year in a row that Chevy has converted a classic car into an EV for SEMA. The automaker did this to show off the capabilities of the eCrate Connect and Cruise system. Okay, it will. The fact is that this is a cool electronic classic!
