Internet is broken
“Now we are in a closed platform wave and Apple and Google are also riding that wave,” Sweeney said. “When we get out of this, everyone will realize, ‘Okay, we’ve taken advantage of this for the past decade.’”
For years searches Epic Games and other tech companies to a solution: the metaverse. And steadily, over several years, Epic has acquired a number of assets. And made strategic steps with the goal of making Sweeney’s vision for the metaverse a reality.
Solution
What is a metaverse now? We hear it often, but the easiest way to define it is as an evolution of how users interact with brands, intellectual property and each other on the Internet. The metaverse, according to Sweeney, would be a vast, digitized communal space where users can freely mingle with brands and each other in ways that allow for self-expression and spark joy. It would be a kind of online playground where one moment users can play a multiplayer game like Epic’s “Fortnite” together with friends.
The next moment they can watch a movie on Netflix and have their friends test drive a new car made exactly the same in the real world as it would be in this virtual one. It wouldn’t, Sweeney said, be the ad-laden news feed presented by platforms like Facebook. Sounds good, but can it become reality?
