The French do not take care of their teeth and tend to dissociate overall health and oral health, according to the survey results.
About half of French people (46%) do not know the link between oral health and health, while there is a link between chronic diseases, cardiovascular illnesses and that the risk ofpremature delivery is three times higher in a pregnant woman with periodontitiswithout forgetting the consequences on malnutrition due to toothlessness.
27% say they are in good general health even though they are not in good oral health.
The majority of French people do not go to the dentist regularly
According to the results of the survey, 64% of French people questioned say they wait less than 1 year between each visit to the dentist. However “the annual check-up should be part of the health course of each Frenchman (professional dental cleaning, early detection of lesions, learning the rules of oral hygiene…)”, recalls the UFSBD in a press release.
The first visit to the dentist should be done at 1 year and must be repeated every two years. But only 16% of parents follow this recommendation. Indeed, more than a third (31%) of them said they waited until the age of 6 for the first date.
Irregular tooth brushing
A quarter (23%) of French respondents said brush your teeth less than twice a day and more than half (53%) of them never use dental floss, “yet essential in the daily arsenal to fight against cavities between the teeth (interproximal caries)” , recalls the UFSBD.
The survey tells us that more than half (52%) of those who suffer from bleeding have not consulted a dentist for more than 1 year and the majority (77%) of those who think they are in good dental health endure sensitivities from time to time. “Yet bleeding is the harbinger of periodontal disease that can go as far as tooth loss,” recalls the UFSBD.
