The place of the hospital divides the French and the doctors. For the former, the hospital plays a central role, while the latter want town medicine to be strengthened.
While the health policies applied for several years aim to limit the use of the hospital, it still plays a central role for the French, reveals the Odoxa barometer (1) made for Le Figaro in partnership with France Inter. They are indeed 59% to hope that the hospital “can offer a complete care of patients suffering from chronic pathologies”.
An opinion that doctors do not share. They are nearly 8 out of 10 to think that in the future, the hospital consultations must be exceptional and are justified only “when the competences or the resources in city medicine are unavailable”.
Improve information sharing
This opposition to the place of the hospital is partly explained by the divergence in the quality of the care pathway. Deemed satisfactory by 72% of patients, the care pathway, as it exists today, satisfies less than one in two doctors. The latter highlight the poor communication and the sometimes difficult sharing of information between the hospital and the town doctors.
Also, to improve the exchange between the various health professionals, doctors and patients are in favor of digital. The two parties agree, for example, on the communication of the hospitalization report or the results of examinations by email or mobile phone.
If the French say they are ready to share their health data – on condition that this is done only between health professionals – it is because they hope for an improvement in the care and monitoring of patients. The other argument put forward is also speed. The general public is therefore in favor of taking and reminding medical appointments over the Internet. A step already taken by some practitioners.
