Nowadays, many people have a nice large television at home. Due to impaired vision, or simply to be completely absorbed in the viewing experience. But what is the best buy?
A television of about 140 centimeters, but for less than 1,000 euros? You can buy a nice mid-range TV for that. If you have a larger budget, a super deluxe OLED TV is also an option. An OLED for under 1,000 is still difficult to find. But there are other bells and whistles that are certainly within reach.
- The 4k resolution, so that you are also ready for future developments in content.
- Local dimming, which can darken the screen in targeted areas when the movie ‘requests’ the TV.
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology that shows more vibrant colors from a wider spectrum on your screen.
- A SMART TV operating system, which allows you to use apps.
But what are good TVs for a good price? A selection of the best options, from cheap to more expensive:
Hitachi 55HK6003W (€499)
This Hitachi is equipped with Ultra HD 4K. Thanks to the 100Hz BPR optimization, the image is displayed smoothly. The operating system is Opera TV (from the makers of the browser Opera).
Philips 55PUS8503 (€749)
A nice large television and the Philips device with the best price-quality ratio. It has a 4k resolution, HDR and all HDR standards, local dimming, Android TV, and as an extra the AmbiLight glow option that is unique at Philips.
Samsung QLED 55Q60R (€848)
As we mentioned in another article, QLED is actually a kind of fake OLED. QLED TVs are just LCD TVs, but the screen contains an extra layer containing nanocrystals – the ‘quantum dots’. These nanocrystals allow the TV to show fuller, more saturated colors. But it is not a ‘real’ OLED. Most hardware tests show that OLED is generally better than QLED, but in some cases, such as watching a dark image in a bright room – QLED is still better.
For a budget under 1,000 euros, this is the best QLED model. It is equipped with 4k resolution with two HDR standards (HDR 10+ and Hybrid Log Gamma, so no Dolby Vision), and comes with Samsung’s own Smart TV system ‘Tizen’.
No OLED, but a top TV from the LCD segment.
Sony KD-55XF9005 (€849)
This was Sony’s best LCD model in 2018 and it’s still an excellent choice. This television has a high brightness and is equipped with Sony’s most advanced image processing and local dimming. The Smart TV operating system is Android TV, and all the major HDR standards are included, so this TV will last for many years to come.
LG OLED 55B8PLA (€999)
Yes, for the fans there is now an OLED TV available, just under 1,000 euros. It is really a budget copy, the cheaper sister of the LG OLED C8. The OLED screen is identical, but the image processor is less strong and the foot is simpler. But in most other areas it is not inferior to more expensive models, and the interface and SMART TV software is exactly the same.
