Americans break Porsche’s record
In 2019, the Porsche Taycan Turbo took the fastest time on the Green Hell for production EVs. Today tweet Elon Musk that the Tesla Model S Plaid has taken over the Nürburgring record for EVs from the Stuttgart brand. And the record has also been shattered by the Tesla. The Model S went 12 seconds faster over the ‘Ring, with a time of 7:30.9. Musk says in the tweet that the Tesla that set the lap time came straight out of the factory.
Not the first record attempt for Tesla
It is not the first time that Elon Musk’s car brand has made a bid for the fastest time at the Nürburgring. In 2019, Tesla itself still thought that a time of 7:05 was possible. That attempt ultimately ended with a crashed Model S and Tesla had to give up on limbs. Now, two years later, it has been possible to keep the fast EV on the asphalt and to drive a good time. Even if it is 25 seconds slower than the brand’s earlier prediction.
Porsche has another faster Taycan on the shelf that they can use to recapture the Nürburgring record for EVs. We haven’t seen the Taycan Turbo S make a record attempt yet, so maybe it can go even faster than the Model S Plaid. The question always remains how relevant these kinds of records are and whether it is not just a glorified competition.
