Remember: on Thursday March 12, 2020, surgeries deemed “non-urgent” were postponed to free up beds for coronavirus patients in clinics and hospitals in France – this particularly concerned bariatric surgeries and the fitting of hip or knee prostheses. At the same time, many medical appointments (especially with specialists) have also been postponed.
Yes, but here it is: according to a UFC-Que-Chooser survey published on July 7, 2020 and conducted among 4,654 French people, this medical delay is now slow to be absorbed … Thus, while three quarters (74%) medical appointments initially scheduled between March 17 and May 11, 2020 were canceled, less than 20% had been rescheduled as of June 12, 2020. UFC-Que-Choisir adds that a third of these appointments had been made for more than 3 months …
Today, only 1 in 5 canceled appointments have been rescheduled
“Even more worrying, this level of reprogramming fell to only 12% for operations and treatments in hospitals.“underlines the association of consumers.
In addition, the UFC-Que-Choose notes the lack of communication from medical and hospital structures vis-à-vis these reprogramming: “only 13% of patients who had their appointment canceled were able to have direct contact with their surgeon, yet the best able to inform them about the medical consequences of this postponement“. And 40% of people who would have needed to see a specialist during confinement remained without a solution …
“Faced with the extent and the persistence of this delay, our association calls on the Minister of Health as well as the regional health agencies to organize without delay a perfect coordination of all the actors, in particular between public and private structures, in order to ” speed up the return to normal“asks the association today.
