A diet and a healthy lifestyle would be the best weapons to treat hypertension and fight against cardiovascular disease. But the dietary recommendations should give more importance to reducing the consumption of added sugar by the food industry in many preparations. It would indeed be involved in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, according to researchers at the Mid America Heart Institute in Saint Luc.
The researchers particularly point the finger at the sugar in corn syrup (the sugar most used in industrial preparations). The sugar contained in the fruits would not be in question.
“A daily consumption of more than 74 grams of sugar of corn syrup would increase by 30% the risk of having a blood pressure higher than 14/9 and by 77% the risk of a pressure higher than 16/10 “. Blood pressure is said to be normal when it is lower at 14/9.
However, a large part of the sugars consumed today are “hidden” in processed foods that are not always considered sweets. For example, 1 tablespoon of ketchup contains about 1 lump of sugar.
“Just as most dietary sodium does not come from the salt shaker, the dietary sugar does not come from the sugar bowl. To reduce your intake of sugars, you must limit processed foods containing too much corn syrup sugar,” says James DiNicolantonio researcher in preventive cardiology at the Mid America Heart Institute in Saint Luc (United States).
“Improving diet and lifestyle is essential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular illnesses in the world population, because these pathologies cause enormous deaths in the world “, remind the researchers. Cardiovascular diseases cause twice as many deaths in Europe as cancers and kill approximately 4 million people per year. 1.8 million suffer from coronary heart disease, 1 million from stroke and 1.2 from other heart disease.
It is therefore recommended not to exceed the daily dose of 6 sugar cubes for adults and 3 for children.
