The stroke (AVC) are frequent, serious and disabling pathologies. In France, they are the leading cause of death in women, with 18,343 deaths in 2013, the third in men, with 13,003 deaths, and are a major cause of acquired non-traumatic motor disability and dementia, according to the latest figures published in the Weekly epidemiological bulletin (BEH) of Public Health France.
Stroke also strikes suddenly that lightning : brutally and without warning. 8 times out of 10 it is due to a blood vessel or an artery in the brain which is blocked. 2 out of 10 times it is because of a bleeding vessel (called a cerebral hemorrhage).
The main risk factors are preventable
84% of strokes are due to identified risk factors : arterial hypertension, smoking, high waist-to-hip ratio, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
Thanks to the development of specialized neuro-vascular units allowing for more rapid treatment of this pathology, the mortality rate fell overall by just over 13% between 2008 and 2013 in all age groups, at l ‘With the exception of women aged 45 to 64 and people over 85, the study said.
According to the BEH, nearly 25% of strokes occur in people under the age of 65 who, in 30% to 50% of cases, are then unable to resume their professional activity. The researchers therefore recommend a better prevention policy.
