Strep throat: potato juice remedy makes doctors jump
In recent days, several TikTok users have posted videos to claim that drinking raw potato juice helps fight strep A strep throat. For example, blogger Allie Casazza – 12,200 followers on the platform – has indicated that the remedy “works frighteningly”. The mother explained that her daughter’s infection had “completely gone in two hours” with this remedy.
This video, which reached more than 100,000 views before being deleted by the user, caused several doctors to react. Indeed, not taking antibiotics can promote the spread of the bacteria in the body and cause several serious complications such as acute articular rheumatism.
“Rather, it is an inflammatory process as a reaction to the strep infection. The parts of the body most commonly affected by inflammation are the joints, heart, skin and nervous system. Most people who suffer acute articular rheumatism are cured, but cardiac damage may be permanent in a small proportion of people”explains the MSD manual on its website.
“This is one of the most dangerous videos I have ever been sent”
Dr Idrees Mughal – who goes by the pseudonym Dr Idz on social media – posted a response video advising against treating a strep A infection known to be “highly contagious” simply with this remedy. “This is one of the most dangerous videos I have ever been sent,” he reacts.
He keeps on : “do not treat your child with potato juice if he has severe symptoms of strep throat”. “If potato juice seems to treat your sore throat. Symptom relief doesn’t mean the bacterial infection is gone”, he explains. The doctor then recommends consulting quickly if your child shows symptoms of strep throat and following the prescriptions given by health professionals.
