During his intervention in the Sunday radio show the Grand Jury RTL / le Figaro / LCI , the Minister of Health Marisol Touraine declared herself in favor of a sharp increase in the price of tobacco. And asked about her wish to see the price of a packet of cigarettes go to 10 euros, the minister replied in the affirmative: “Yes, of course as soon as possible, I don’t know when, and it is not at the horizon of this five-year period that the package will be at ten euros, but yes”, she clarified.
“I have always said that if we want to fight against tobacco we have to go all out, we have to go frankly. The price of tobacco is a public health issue”, she continued.
But the measure will not be easy to implement, the deputies having recently refused any further increase the price of tobacco.
The last increase in the price of cigarettes thus dates back to January 2014: the cheapest package rising to 6.50 euros and the most expensive to 7 euros.
In her fight against smoking, Marisol Touraine has succeeded in imposing the neutral package, which will be set up at tobacconists in a few months. This package will no longer feature the logo or brand colors and will be a uniform olive green shade.
