Singer and rapper Stien den Hollander (S10) will represent the Netherlands in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with a Dutch song. This is remarkable, because in recent years our entries almost always consisted of English songs. Do you think all countries should sing in their own language? Respond to our statement.
Singer Sieneke, the last artist to perform a Dutch song at the Eurovision Song Contest, is very happy and proud that S10 will be singing in her native language. “That’s how it should be,” she tells NPO Radio 5.
Stand out with your own language
Sieneke thinks that candidates have a better chance of winning the European title if they sing in their own language. According to her, it is less about the act these days, because you no longer score with a crazy act. “It’s more about the song, you have to keep it small. And then you can still try to stand out with your own language.”
Benefit for United Kingdom
In the early years of the now 65-year-old song festival, it was still mandatory for countries to sing in their own language. This was criticized because the United Kingdom would have an advantage because it could always sing in English. According to critics, you reached the largest audience with that language. Therefore, the rule was abolished in 1999. Since then, every country can sing in any language. Most countries opt for English-language numbers.
