An extremely dangerous spider, phoneutria nigriventer accustomed to hiding in banana bunches is believed to produce venom which may be effective in combating erectile dysfunction. It would be more effective than Viagra. Researchers at the Federal University of Madras (Brazil) found that among the side effects of the bite of the phoneutria nigriventer spider, men suffered from a very painful erection that lasted for several hours.
Scientists analyzed the venom of this spider and observed two toxins, PnTx2-6 and PnPP-19. They made them in the lab because these substances are able to increase the production of nitric oxide, a vasodilator that causes an erection, and make it last for several hours.
To test for these toxins, the researchers tested them on lab mice. They observed that the substance PnTx2-6 caused undesirable effects in rodents. It caused blood congestion which ultimately causes heart failure. In contrast, the second toxin seems more promising. PnPP-19 was able to stimulate erection in mice and did not cause any change in blood level or promote other side effects.
While the results of these tests are encouraging, they should be put to the test in human clinical trials.
“These results prove that this substance can make it possible to manufacture a natural treatment to effectively treat erectile dysfunction,” the researchers concluded.
“Erectile dysfunction (or impotence) is defined as” the persistent or repeated inability to achieve and / or maintain an erection sufficient to allow satisfactory sexual activity, “according to the World Health Organization. It affects about 4% of men in their fifties, nearly 17% in their sixties and its incidence reaches 47% after 75 years, but only 20 to 25% of the men concerned consult and only 4% of the men concerned seek treatment.
