A new development for medically assisted procreation (MAP) in Spain. The socialist government of José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, in power between 2004 and 2011, made it free through the public health system for all women.
His successor, the conservative Mariano Rajoy, had banned access to single women and lesbian couples. But the politician was ejected from power last June by a motion of censure. His successor, Pedro Sanchez, who marks the return of the Socialists to power, wanted to reverse this restrictive measure.
Equality and feminism at the heart of government policy
He wants to re-authorize free access to assisted reproduction for all women from 2019. The aim is to offer “the possibility for single women and lesbian women to access treatment” according to his Ministry of Health. . In fact, until then, the latter had to resort to paying private clinics.
The Sanchez government has made equality and feminism one of the main causes of its policy. He also announced on the eve of Gay Pride in Madrid, the creation of a general directorate for equal treatment and diversity. June 28 has been declared National LGBTI Pride Day. The Zapatero government had meanwhile legalized marriage for same-sex couples in Spain.
