Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: I had been prescribed ampoules with vitamin D, which are now gone. Now I am advised 20 micrograms of vitamin D. Is this sensible? I get injections of Kenacort and I have tan skin.

Answer:
Taking extra vitamin D is definitely a good idea. Your doctor has probably prescribed you vitamin D because the medications you are taking put you at a higher risk of bone fractures. The high-dose ampoules help to correct a vitamin D level that is too low in the blood. After that, it is important to keep that mirror up to date. This is possible with a dose of 20 micrograms per day. Because you have a dark complexion, your skin produces less vitamin D in the sun. Even more reason to continue swallowing. The Nutrition Center recommends extra intake anyway. For women over 50 the guideline is 400 units (10 micrograms) per day and for everyone over 70 years 800 units (20 micrograms).
