Sepsis is a serious infection that can be fatal. Kia Marie Brazil, who suffered from it in 2019, has had both legs and fingers amputated. Today model, she testifies.
- Sepsis often affects patients with weakened immune systems.
- It can happen that people have septic shock after an invasive procedure such as surgery.
Every year, 60,000 people die from a sepsis in France according to the Pasteur Institute. Globally, this figure is estimated at 11 million per year. This, also called sepsis or septic shock, is a general infection of the blood caused by the presence of bacteria, even fungi or viruses. This infection spreads throughout the body.
Low blood pressure and organ failure
There are several manifestations of septic shock: confusion, decreased alertness, restlessness, fever, chills, hot skin, rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, rash, drop in blood pressure. When there is a sharp drop in blood pressure, the blood no longer circulates normally to the organs, which therefore cannot function properly. Eventually, this causes organ failure and death.
stomach pain
Kia Marie Brazil, a young woman now a model, was diagnosed with sepsis in 2019. One day, when she had never felt any symptoms, she was struck by very severe stomach pains . She is quickly hospitalized and the verdict falls: her stomach is very seriously infected… Which is due to sepsis. “The doctors (…) then told my family that all my organs were deterioratingexplains the young woman to the magazine Closer. They thought at that time that I was living my last moments, and my family prepared to say goodbye to me.”
A survivor
A few days later, Kia Marie Brazil suffered two heart attacks and was transferred to another hospital where the medical teams believe that her chances of survival are extremely low, “less than 1%”. She then underwent a second operation during which her right leg was amputated. “My left leg and my fingers were black, deadshe continues. They were awful”. She then decides to amputate them as well. The doctors accept and, in view of the extent of the infection, also decide to remove a large part of his stomach.
“I had prostheses fitted about a year after my amputations, and I can now move around, she explains. I had to learn to survive and now I’m much stronger than I’ve ever been.” After this long and painful medical journey, Kia Marie Brazil is now a model for an agency specializing in models with disabilities.
