A new study published in the journal Sexual Medicine and taken up by the EurkAlert site reveals that sexual activity is associated with improved well-being in the elderly.
The study was conducted in England on 6,879 people with an average age of 65 years. Among them, some were sexually active and others inactive. The study revealed that those who had had sex in the previous 12 months enjoyed life more than those who did not.
One of the study’s researchers, Dr. Smith, explained that previous research has already shown that regular sexual intercourse plays an important role in both physical and psychological well-being. Sex also improves quality of life, mental health and even prevents certain cancers and heart disease!
The most important sexual act for older men
Among women, the results show that it is the frequency of kisses and caresses that counts, more than the sexual act itself. On the men’s side, satisfaction is found in the sexual relationship more than in gestures of affection. The sexual act is more important for older men than for older women.
Old people are not asexual. But the company does not address them in terms of information relating to sex, such as the different possibilities of positions for example. The study reveals that it would be beneficial for seniors to receive more advice in their sexual life, in particular to overcome age-related difficulties.
