My daughter has congenital hip dysplasia. She was operated on as a child and has since had two children. The doctors say they can’t do anything. The circulation in her legs is poor and she is in a lot of pain. The physiotherapist says that a so-called bicycle bell method would be the best for her, but we do not know where it is done in the Netherlands. And apparently you are not insured for an artificial hip under the age of 50. Where is the best place to get a second opinion?
Mrs. J. Buskoop
Frank van Oosterhout, orthopedic surgeon
You describe a complex situation. I understand that you are so involved and want your daughter to have a less difficult time. Unfortunately I don’t have a definitive solution for your daughter, that is impossible via the internet. Based on your writing, I understand that your daughter has already been to several orthopedic surgeons due to her move.
If she wants a second opinion, she can. This is regulated by law, is done through your GP and is part of the basic package. So it is reimbursed, but there are limitations.
I therefore advise your daughter to contact her health insurer in advance. You can also find more information on the website of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: www.kiesbeter.nl/Zorgverzekeringen.
With regard to the reimbursement of a hip prosthesis: if the orthopedic surgeon believes that this is the best solution, the health insurer will reimburse this. Age does not play a role in this.
Whether a hip prosthesis, regular or a resurfacing prosthesis (what you call a bicycle bell), will have the desired effect for your daughter, I cannot tell you. Has she already discussed this with her treating orthopedic surgeon? These prostheses are the solution to their problem for many people, but unfortunately they are not suitable for everyone.
You mention ‘numbness’ and falling while crossing the road. This may indicate that there is a neurological problem; something with the nerves. In that case, the neurologist is the appropriate specialist.
