Seat is a relatively young brand at the auto manufacturer level. Everyone knows the Ibiza or the Leon. Are they also the brand’s most popular models? L’argus invites you to discover the ten most produced cars by the Iberian manufacturer since 1950.
Argus takes another look at the models most produced by car manufacturers. After Peugeot, Citroën, Ford or Volvo, let’s discover the top 10 of Seat, acronym of Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo (“Société Espagnole d’Automobiles de Tourisme” in French). The Iberian manufacturer was born in 1950 at the instigation of the Spanish government and with the help of Fiat ! Moreover, the Italian brand kept control until 1982. It was not until 1986 that the Volkswagen group bought 51% of the manufacturer’s shares. Seat embodies the “young” brand of the German entity. Did you know ? In just over seventy years, Seat has released a total of 75 models.

Ibiza at the top

Appeared in 1984, the Ibiza is at the top of the ranking of the most produced cars. In thirty-eight years of career and five generations, almost 6 million copies (5,942,717) of the city car have come off the assembly lines. The Ibiza is Seat’s biggest commercial success and it is far ahead of the Leon, in second position. The compact has produced more than 2.4 million units since it entered the market in 1999. In its first generation, the Seat leon could receive the 204 hp VR6 2.8 borrowed from its first cousin Golf. Now, the sportiest version is a plug-in hybrid (245 hp) and badged Cupra.

Fiat licensed Seats
The podium is completed by the Seat 127, cousin of the Fiat 127. The city car marketed for ten years (1972 to 1982) met with great success at the time, in particular thanks to its XXL habitability. The end of production of the 127 puts an end to the collaboration, which began in the 1950s, between the Spanish manufacturer and the Italian brand. Do not be surprised to see, among the 10 most produced models, several vehicles bear a family resemblance with Fiat productions: the Marbella based on Panda, the 124 derived from the Fiat 124, the 600 A true copy of the Fiat 600, or even its big sister the 850, which takes up exactly the lines of the two-door transalpine. On the Spanish market, the latter will also be available as a coupe, a convertible and, in 1967, a new extended version (+ 15 cm) known as “Largo”.

Faced with the success ofIbiza, Seat wanted to market in 1993 a notchback version of its city car. However, in order to differentiate it, it adopts the name Cordoba. The compact sedan was produced in more than one million copies (1,034,465 units) until 2009. It is the fourth most produced model by Seat, followed closely by another compact notchback that appeared in 1991, the Toledo (1,019,636 copies). The launch of the third generation (2005-2009) marked a turning point in the history of the model, which transformed into a minivan.
