In 2020, several manufacturers presented or marketed new plug-in hybrids, offering new perspectives to this growing market. The start of 2021 proves it, with more than 70,000 units sold in France and a completely revised classification.
Of the 922,716 vehicles sold in the first half of 2021, 71,785 models were equipped with a plug-in hybrid engine. A strong increase, compared to the 20,192 units sold over the same period in 2020. The increase is explained by the discontinuation of diesel at certain manufacturers, the ecological bonus of € 2,000 (€ 1,000 since the 1er July) and by the launch of many new products from manufacturers. Without forgetting that to meet their CO reduction target2, manufacturers and their networks are pushing for plug-in hybrids, particularly in companies.

French manufacturers in the lead
Well placed in the top 30 hybrids last year, French manufacturers are consolidating their place at the top of the PHEV ranking thanks to the arrival of new models. The restyled 3008, which offers two plug-in hybrid variants of 225 and 300 hp, is a great success with 9,339 units sold in the first half of 2021. It won first place in this ranking, far ahead of the Renault Captur E-Tech Plug-in, which has also recently had a simple hybrid version of 145 hp. The Losange SUV is second, with 5,359 units sold. Behind him, we find in third position another SUV from the third French manufacturer, the Citroën C5 Aircross (3,945 copies).
Fourth place is conquered by DS with its DS7 Crossback E-Tense, which sold just over 3,000 units. The Peugeot 508 and Renault Mégane are also in the top 10: the Peugeot is sixth in the standings, while the Renault is behind it. The arrival of the sedan variant of the Mégane E-Tech, only offered as a station wagon when it was marketed, it seems to have been successful in the first months.
Volvo and Ford among the good students
In the top 30, it is also necessary to count on the presence of Volvo. The Swede places its compact SUV XC40 plug-in hybrid in fifth position, with 2,708 units sold in the first half of 2021. The XC60 brings up the rear of the top 10 with 1,590 copies over the same period, while the large XC90 finished in the 27e place with 836 units. Ford is also at the top of the basket with its Kuga (1,733 ex.). Renewed in 2020, the SUV also has a simple hybrid variant to complete its range.
Germans well represented
Manufacturers from across the Rhine have also released several new products. Audi is thus back in the top 10 with its A3 TFSI e (1726 ex.), While Mini is regaining color with its restyled Countryman SE (11e place, 1,576 copies, + 130%). The second generation of the Mercedes GLA gets off to a good start with just over 1,500 units lapsed for the 250th plug-in hybrid. At BMW, the X5, X3 and X1 SUVs are also in the top 30. Volkswagen is struggling a little more, with a restyled (and now hybrid) Tiguan that starts well, but the Golf 8 has only sold 1,200 PHEV versions.
This ranking marks the notable arrival of the MG EHS. The plug-in hybrid SUV from China is off to a strong start for its first months of marketing with us, thanks to its access price barely above € 30,000, bonus deducted.
