Not strapped in, they call while driving and exceed speed limits. A good part of the French admit taking risks when driving according to a recent survey.
On the eve of the summer crossovers, wearing a seatbelt is more important than ever. However, according to an OpinionWay survey carried out for the group of insurance companies Assureurs Prévention, a quarter of French people sometimes forget to complete it.
It is an understatement to say that drivers in France are reckless behind the wheel. Of the 1,0009 people questioned, 16% admit driving without a seatbelt. On the passenger side, it is worse since 26% of them travel this way, whereas it has been compulsory since 1990. When asked about the reasons for this risky behavior, they often answer that they feel safe. Yet at 50 km / h the front seat becomes as dangerous as a concrete wall. And last year, 20% of those killed on the roads were not properly secured.
Even in the presence of children
It is not only for the seat belt that the French put aside caution. They are also a third to phone while driving, and a quarter to use their smartphone to manage emails and SMS. They often cite a short, familiar ride. It is precisely these routes that are the most accident-prone, regularly reminds Road Safety.
And the presence of children is not enough to moderate the behavior of French drivers. The vast majority of respondents (86%) recognize inappropriate behavior in the presence of a minor (speeding, phone while driving, etc.). On the other hand, they buckle the seatbelt more when the passenger is under 18: half of the people questioned say that it does not start until all the children are not strapped in. The latest road safety surveys confirm this: 90% of children passengers are properly restrained, compared to 80% of adults.
