Jars of black olives called “Délices d’Olives Noires”, from the “L’atelier de Charlotte” brand, sold in markets in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, present a risk of botulism. This poisoning due to bacteria appears in the event of improper sterilization or storage of a product.
The General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Control (DGCCRF), alerted by the company, advises anyone who has purchased jars of 90, 180 and 270 g, drawn from lots with dates of expiration dates from April 13, 2014 to August 22, 2014, to bring them back or destroy them.
“Due to their low acidity, these preparations for which a lack of control of the conservation heat treatment process has been observed are likely to allow the development of the germ clostridium botulinum and the production of botulinum toxin”, explains the DGCCRF in a press release. .
Symptoms to take into account
If you have consumed olives from “L’atelier de Charlotte” and you have signs which may indicate contamination with botulism (fatigue, blurred vision, speech problems, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, vomiting or diarrhea), ‘do not hesitate to go to your doctor, informing him of this consumption.
“The symptoms of botulism generally appear 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of a contaminated food, but they can develop earlier or later (2 hours up to 10 days)”, recalls the DGCCRF.
Poorly treated, this poisoning can cause respiratory failure and lead to death. On the other hand, if treated quickly with antitoxin and, if necessary, by assisted ventilation, patients recover without sequelae. Treatment and recovery can last several months.
