The white-with-yellow plate was suddenly on the Buikslotermeerplein
A white plate with a yellow dot – most people see a fried egg in it. The sign suddenly appeared on the Buikslotermeerplein in Amsterdam, but no one could say what it meant. And be honest: can you still remember the board from the theory exam? We also feel a bit squeamish.
If you now confidently say that you know what the fried egg road sign means, then you are an excellent bluff. Because no, it doesn’t mean ‘forbidden the mess’. The sign means nothing. According to AT5 it is a work of art by an anonymous artist. The fact that it looks convincing is because the sign was made by the company TrafficSupply. The same company also makes the real road signs in the Netherlands.
Can an artistic person create so much confusion for the sake of art? No, as the municipality of Amsterdam informs AT5: ‘It looks cheerful, but you can’t just put up signs in the city. That causes confusion. That’s why we’re going to remove the signs.’
