The studies follow each other and are not alike as to the benefits of red wine on health. A new scientific work published in the medical journal Scientific Reports, shows that resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine but also in other foods such as grapes or chocolate, would fight against cognitive decline and slow down memory loss related to aging. Conclusions obtained after tests on rats.
Researchers at Texas A&M University (USA) studied the effects of resveratrol on the memory of rats.
The researchers subjected a group of rodents to a treatment enriched with resveratrol and compared the evolution of their memory with that of a control group.
The findings of the study reveal that rats treated with resveratrol improved their memory and spatial learning. In contrast, rodents in the control group that had not received resveratrol lost some of this ability between 22 and 25 months of age.
“Their ability to create new spatial memories in the control group was dropping,” explained Professor Ashok Shetty, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Texas A&M University. “In question the decline in neurogenesis (creation of neurons)”.
Conversely, the development of neurons had almost doubled in rats who had received resveratrol supplements, continues the professor. They also recorded better blood flow and less inflammation in the hippocampus, a key part of the brain for learning, memory and mood.
“The development of new neurons was about twice as great in the resveratrol group. The brains of these rats also seemed to be better supplied with blood and their hippocampus (a structure closely associated with memory) showed fewer signs of inflammation,” said Professor Ashok Shetty, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University. Texas A&M.
“This study provides new evidence that resveratrol treatments around age 60 can help improve memory and mood functions in later life,” Professor Ashok Shetty concludes.
And for those who are not wine or chocolate lovers, know that resveratrol is also found in blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, or even pomegranate.
