Good result for France. Out of 2,955 measurements, the limit values for exposure to radio waves are respected every time in the country.
In terms of radio waves, France is doing quite well. According to the last report of the National Frequencies Authority (ANFR), the limit values are respected on all the sites measured in 2014. The readings nevertheless highlight some disparities between the towns and the countryside.
Indeed, the levels of radioelectric fields are slightly higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The same imbalance is observed between interior and exterior, to the detriment of the second. But in all of the sites inspected – 2,955 in total – the values set in the 2002 decree are respected.
In only 18 cases, the measured field level exceeded 6 volts per meter (V / m), each time in an urban environment. Most of the time, mobile telephony was responsible.
Moderate health effects
Even when the measurements are normal, the mobile phone is by far the primary contributor of radio waves. Although less represented in the countryside, it represents on average 60% of the surveys. When they are carried out outdoors, the share is even higher (75%).
Reassuring results, even if radio waves have little impact on health. However, in high doses, these waves can warm body tissue and cause symptoms similar to fever or heat.
As for the effects of cell phones, work is increasing even if a consensus is far from being reached in this area. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), electromagnetic waves – of which mobile telephony is a part – can be classified as “possibly carcinogenic” to humans, due to associations with brain tumors.
