According to researchers at Harvard and Boston University, men who ejaculate more than 21 times a month are less likely to develop this disease.
It’s science that says it: masturbating is good for your health! The NHS, the UK healthcare system, even encourages men to practice onanism. The reason ? This would reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.
The prostate is a gland that is part of the male reproductive system. It is located under the bladder, in front of the rectum, and it surrounds the channel through which urine is evacuated from the bladder, “the urethra”.
A study published in the journal European Urology, and conducted by researchers at Harvard and Boston University, looked at 31,925 healthy men, who in 1992 had completed a questionnaire about the frequency of their ejaculation.
The men, aged 20 to 29 or 40 to 49 at the time, were followed until 2010, a period during which 3,839 of them were diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Result: The researchers found that the risks of prostate cancer in these two populations were significantly reduced if these people ejaculated at least 21 times per month (whether by masturbating or having sex). This result was compared with men who ejaculated only 4-7 times per month.
40,000 new cases per year
However, researchers do not explain the reasons that may explain why ejaculating reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer. Previous research considered that ejaculation helps get rid of elements that promote the appearance of cancer, such as inflammation, or infections in the glans.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for British men, according to the NHS, with 40,000 new cases being diagnosed each year.
