A first in 30 years of career for the doctor
The couple, Breanna and her husband Aaron Lockwood, married in 2016 and have been trying hard to have a child. They tried the natural way before turning to fertilization in vitro and more surgeries. Nothing worked and Breanna had many miscarriages. It was then that their doctor, Brian Kaplan, presented them with the idea of surrogacy. If the mother’s uterus makes pregnancy impossible, the embryos are healthy and therefore surrogacy is possible.
The couple turned to Julie Loving, Breanna’s mother, to carry the child. An unusual choice. “It is very important that people know that it is not a normal and recurrent practice to use your mother to carry your child.continues Dr. Brian Kaplan. It must be a unique situation.” For him, this is a first in 30 years of career. The idea came directly from the new grandmother. “My mother came with me to a medical appointment and she told doctor Kaplan that she wanted to carry the childrecalls Breanna Lockwood. He didn’t say yes right away. There were a lot of hurdles we had to jump through to make this achievable..”
An Instagram page and a small book
The 51-year-old woman then underwent a battery of tests and was seen by five specialists to find out if such an operation is possible. For her, there was no doubt. “I have run 19 marathons and done many triathlonslaunches the new grandmother. I felt like I was healthy enough to do it and both of my pregnancies had been really easy.” The first embryo transfer, last March, immediately worked. “When we had the happy result, we had to stay calm because we had had too many false joys and traumas before.”, she recalls.
The mother and daughter did not leave each other during the entire period of pregnancy and told their story on an instagram page specially created. They do not intend to hide this reality from the newborn and are happy to share their story with the 140,000 people who follow them. “We will explain everything to her from an early age and be as honest as possible with her.“says the grandmother. The latter even confided that she was writing a little book to retrace this whole adventure and so that Briar knew her story.
